Lamar CISD Dedicates Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium, Celebrating Growth and Legacy

The lights were on, the stands were ready, and a new chapter of Lamar CISD athletics officially began. On August 27, Lamar CISD welcomed students, families, staff, and community members to celebrate the dedication of Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium, the District’s new athletic venue, located at 7920 FM 723 in Richmond.

The dedication marked more than the opening of an expanded stadium. It reflected a growing district preparing for a growing community. This school year, Lamar CISD surpassed 50,000 students for the first time—a historic milestone that underscores the need for additional spaces where students can learn, compete, perform, and connect.

As that growth continues, Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium creates additional space for student-athletes, bands, cheerleaders, drill teams, and families to come together for the traditions and experiences that make school communities special.

“As our District grows, our responsibility is to make sure the opportunities we create grow right alongside it,” Lamar CISD Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens said. “When I look at this stadium, I don’t just see seats, lights, or a field. I see a student taking the field for the first time, a band performing in front of their community, a family cheering from the stands, and memories our kids will carry with them long after they leave Lamar CISD. That is what this is all about.”

The facility was developed in phases alongside Gene Tomas High School, which opened its doors to students in August 2025. Construction on the second phase began in September 2025 and the expansion was completed in August 2026.

While the stadium represents Lamar CISD's future, the name it carries honors an important part of the District's history.

Paul Scherer was a longtime Fort Bend County attorney and community leader with deep ties to Lamar CISD. He served 21 years on the Lamar CISD Board of Trustees, including multiple terms as Board president, dedicating more than two decades to supporting public education and the students and families of the community.

His name was selected through Lamar CISD’s facility naming process, which included community nominations, a public hearing, trustee review, and final consideration by the Board of Trustees. The Board formally approved the name Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium in January 2026.

Throughout Fort Bend County, Scherer was known for his integrity, humility, thoughtful leadership, and quiet generosity.

Reflecting on his years of service, Scherer once shared what inspired that commitment. “I felt that I’ve been so fortunate here and people have been so good to me, and it was such a nice, clean, wholesome town to live in that I should give something back to the community,” Scherer said. “I felt very strongly about that because of my feelings towards Richmond and Fort Bend County.”

Now, his legacy will live in a space where generations of Lamar CISD students and families will create special memories.

Following the dedication, the celebration moved from ceremony to competition as the Fulshear High School Chargers took the field against the Andy Dekaney High School Wildcats and kicked off the football season.

The first game marked the beginning of a new season, but the story of Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium is only beginning. In the years ahead, thousands of students will take the field, families will fill the stands, and new Lamar CISD traditions will take shape—carrying forward the name of a community servant who spent decades creating opportunities for the generations that followed.
